ARAITERURU KI UTA, ARAITEURU KI TAI
The stories of our ancestral canoe are remembered in the landscape, in our waters and in our hearts.
Due to the COVID 19 global outbreak we are discontinuing tours for the next one to two months.
Please take care of yourselves and your communities.
Welcome to our small coastal community of Karitane and to the centre of our universe. The waka (canoe) has a deep spiritual and cultural significance in Maori culture. Today we use the waka as a way of connecting to our environment, past and future onthe Waikouaiti river.
Karitane Maori Tours is owned and operated by the local iwi, Kati Huirapa ki Puketeraki. Our mission is to restore the natural landscape of Karitane and to support local community groups. Our guests plant a native shrub on the sandspit, O Hinepouwera. Each tour helps us to continue our work with young people, schoolgroups and community volunteers.
