Safety

Our guides have years of experience on the Waikouaiti River and Te Tai o Araiteuru - the sea off the coast of Kāritane.
We are all members of the local waka club, Huateruruku ki Puketeraki, and have a great record of keeping our guests safe and dry (from the knees up!).
Whether you paddle our wakaunua (double hulled canoe) or our wakaama (outrigger canoe) you can be assured that our waka and paddles are rigorously checked so you can enjoy your time with us in confidence.

Please let us know if you or one of your group has a disability and we will endeavour to get you on the water and having a great time. If you will require any medication during your tour please let us know in advance.

Things to bring for your tour:

• Shorts
• Thermal top or quick dry top
• Water
• Sunblock
• Warm clothing

We will provide :

• Water shoes
• Windbreaker
• Lifejacket (to be worn at all times on the waka)
• Training on paddling our waka and basic water safety

We want your experience to be as enjoyable as possible, so our safety procedures are at the forefront of our operation.

Our Awa and Awa Iti tours are conducted on flat river and estuary waters and do not enter the open sea.
